Start with the reason
When a wisdom tooth needs attention
Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the back of the mouth. They may become impacted, meaning they remain trapped under the gum or in the jaw, or they may erupt at an angle that is difficult to clean. Removal may be considered when there is pain, infection, decay, gum disease, a cyst, or damage to a neighboring tooth. A wisdom tooth that is not causing symptoms may sometimes be monitored instead; removal is not automatic for every patient.
Your consultation includes an examination and appropriate dental imaging. We will discuss how many teeth may need attention, whether the tooth appears straightforward or complex to remove, and whether referral to an oral surgeon is the safer choice.
Removal or monitoring
The recommendation depends on the tooth position, cleaning access, symptoms, surrounding structures, and your broader dental plan.
A plan built around you

A clear appointment path
What to expect before, during, and after removal
Before treatment, the dentist reviews your findings and explains anesthesia or sedation choices that may be appropriate. We offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation among our comfort options, but eligibility varies. Sedation can require monitoring and a responsible adult escort; the team will give you specific instructions rather than assuming one option fits everyone.
The removal itself may involve numbing the area, opening the gum, removing a small amount of bone, dividing the tooth into sections, cleaning the socket, and placing stitches or gauze when needed. Afterward, follow the written instructions about bleeding, medicines, food, activity, mouth cleaning, and tobacco. Swelling and soreness can occur. Call if bleeding is excessive, pain is severe or worsening, fever develops, or swelling increases after the first few days. Seek emergency medical help for trouble breathing or swallowing.
Protect the blood clot
Use gauze as directed, choose soft foods at first, avoid straws and tobacco, and do not rinse, spit, or brush the surgical area until instructed.
Call first for urgent concerns
Call (225) 665-2417 for dental guidance. Severe swelling or any breathing or swallowing difficulty needs emergency medical attention.
Comfort with appropriate boundaries
Comfort options and referral when needed
Local anesthesia is used to numb the treatment area. If anxiety, the expected complexity, or your health history calls for additional support, ask about our nitrous, oral, and IV sedation options. The dentist will review suitability, fasting or medication instructions, monitoring, and transportation requirements. No sedation choice guarantees a particular experience, and some cases are best managed by an oral surgeon.
A consultation does not obligate you to proceed. It gives you a chance to ask about risks such as dry socket, infection, nearby tooth or nerve injury, sinus concerns, healing time, and alternatives.
Plan before treatment
Discuss cost and payment before you decide
There is no single wisdom-teeth removal fee. The total can vary with the number and position of teeth, imaging, complexity, anesthesia or sedation, referral needs, and follow-up. Ask the team for a current estimate based on your examination rather than relying on a general price.
We work with numerous dental insurance companies and file medical insurance to help patients afford treatment, but benefits and patient responsibility depend on the plan. We accept Visa, Mastercard, CareCredit, and Cherry payment plans. We also offer an in-house Discount Dental Plan (not dental insurance). Insurance benefits and financing terms vary by plan and provider. Our team will review your options before treatment. Call the office to confirm what applies to your case.

A little clarity helps
Wisdom Teeth Removal: Your Questions, Answered.
There is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Bring your questions—we’ll help you understand what fits your smile.
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth that is healthy, functional, and easy to keep clean may be monitored. Removal may be recommended when there is pain, infection, decay, gum disease, a cyst, damage to a neighboring tooth, or another clinical concern. An examination and imaging are needed for an individual recommendation.
Can Bencaz remove impacted wisdom teeth?
The dentist will assess the tooth's position and complexity. Some removals can be planned in the dental office, while a deeply impacted or unusually difficult case may be referred to an oral surgeon. The consultation is the right time to clarify who should provide the procedure.
What should I eat after wisdom teeth removal?
Follow the instructions given for your procedure. Soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, or other foods that do not require much chewing are commonly used at first. Avoid hot, hard, chewy, or spicy foods that could irritate the site, and avoid straws because suction can disturb the blood clot.
Will I need someone to drive me home?
If sedation is used, you may need a responsible adult escort and should not plan to drive yourself. The exact transportation and activity instructions depend on the medication and procedure. Confirm them with the team before your appointment.
How do I get a current estimate?
Call Bencaz Family Dentistry at (225) 665-2417 to arrange an evaluation and ask about a case-specific estimate. Insurance benefits, payment-plan eligibility, and discount-plan terms are plan-dependent, so confirm current details with the office before treatment.
