The purpose

Treat the inside of the tooth while preserving what can be saved

A root canal treats inflamed or infected pulp, the living tissue inside a tooth. The dentist creates an opening, removes the affected tissue, cleans and shapes the root canals, then fills and seals the space. This may relieve the source of dental pain and help preserve the natural tooth.

One-visit root canal therapy may be an option for suitable teeth. A single-visit approach is not appropriate for every tooth or every situation, so an examination and imaging are needed before timing can be discussed. A tooth may also need a temporary or final restoration after the canal treatment.

  • Root canal treatment

For a tooth with pulp inflammation or infection when preserving the tooth remains a reasonable option.

  • Other options

Depending on the tooth's condition, the alternatives may include another restorative approach, referral for specialist care, or extraction followed by discussion of replacement options.

Your evaluation

Candidacy depends on the tooth, not just the symptom

Deep decay, a crack, a dental injury, or repeated dental work can affect the pulp. Symptoms may include lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, pain with biting, swelling, or a toothache, but symptoms vary and some infected teeth cause little warning. An exam, dental history, and appropriate X-rays help determine what is happening.

Root canal treatment cannot repair every severely damaged tooth. Your dentist will consider remaining tooth structure, the surrounding gums and bone, the location of the tooth, your overall health, and your goals. If the case is more complex than can be managed here, referral to an endodontist may be discussed.

What to expect

From diagnosis to the final restoration

The visit begins with an evaluation and a conversation about findings and choices. During treatment, local anesthetic is used, the tooth is accessed, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and the space is sealed. Depending on the tooth and the plan, a temporary filling or restoration may be placed before the final restoration.

Follow the instructions you receive for medicines and eating. Brush and floss gently around the area, and avoid hard chewing on a tooth with a temporary filling or crown until your dentist clears it. Contact the office if severe pain or pressure continues, swelling appears, your bite feels uneven, a temporary restoration comes out, or earlier symptoms return. Seek emergency medical help for severe swelling that affects breathing or swallowing.

Planning ahead

Discuss the full plan and current payment terms

There is no single root canal fee. The tooth involved, complexity, imaging, the restoration needed afterward, and any additional care can affect the total. We work with numerous dental insurance companies and accept Visa, MasterCard, CareCredit, and Cherry payment plans. We also offer an in-house Discount Dental Plan (not dental insurance). Deductibles, copayments, and eligibility are plan-dependent. Insurance benefits and financing terms vary by plan and provider. Our team will review your options before treatment.

A little clarity helps

Root Canals: Your Questions, Answered.

There is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Bring your questions—we’ll help you understand what fits your smile.

Does a root canal always take one visit?

No. One-visit root canal therapy may be an option, but the number of visits depends on the tooth, infection, anatomy, restoration, and clinical findings. The dentist can discuss likely timing after examining you.

How do I know whether I need a root canal?

Lingering temperature sensitivity, pain with biting, a deep cavity, swelling, or an injury can be warning signs, but symptoms alone cannot diagnose the problem. An examination and appropriate X-rays are needed.

Will the tooth need a crown after a root canal?

Often, a treated tooth needs a protective final restoration, but the recommendation depends on how much tooth structure remains and which tooth was treated. Your dentist will explain the restoration plan, including whether a crown is appropriate.

What should I do if pain or swelling returns?

Call Bencaz Family Dentistry for guidance, especially if pain or pressure is severe, swelling appears, your bite feels uneven, or a temporary filling or crown comes out. Severe swelling with trouble breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical help.

How can I find out what my root canal will cost?

Ask for a current, individualized estimate after the examination. The total can include the root canal, imaging, and the restoration afterward. Call to discuss your plan and estimate.
