A clearer picture

What an oral exam can look at

An exam is more than checking for a cavity. Your dentist reviews your dental and medical history, looks at the teeth and gums, and considers your bite and the soft tissues of your mouth. The visit may also include an oral cancer screening and a conversation about brushing, cleaning between teeth, sensitivity, clenching, or any change you have noticed.

X-rays are not automatically the same for every patient. When images are appropriate, the dentist considers your oral health, symptoms, history, and when you last had them. X-rays can reveal areas that cannot be seen by looking in the mouth, such as hidden decay or changes around the bone. An exam and a cleaning are related, but they are not the same service; your team can explain what is planned for your appointment.

Individual planning

Who may benefit from an exam

Routine exams are useful for children, adults, and patients returning after time away. The right interval depends on your risk and circumstances. You may need a closer schedule if you have had cavities or gum disease, use medicines that cause dry mouth, smoke, are pregnant, or have another health factor that affects your mouth. Your dentist will recommend an interval rather than assuming one schedule fits everyone.

An exam cannot predict every future problem or replace daily home care. It also does not mean that treatment is automatically needed. If the team finds a concern, you will have an opportunity to discuss its urgency, alternatives, and what can reasonably wait.

Your visit

What to expect before and after

Before the visit, bring an updated medication and health history and mention pregnancy, allergies, new symptoms, or dental anxiety. Tell the team what you want to understand; a question about a sore spot, bleeding gums, a chipped tooth, or a change in your bite is a useful place to begin. At the appointment, the dentist will explain findings and discuss whether follow-up, a cleaning, imaging, or another service makes sense.

After an exam, most patients simply return to normal daily care unless another procedure is planned. Follow the individualized brushing and between-teeth cleaning advice you receive. If you have swelling, fever, significant pain, or an injury, call rather than waiting for a routine exam. Severe swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing needs emergency medical help.

Planning ahead

Fees, insurance, and scheduling

The cost of an exam can depend on the type of visit, imaging, and your plan. We work with numerous dental insurance companies and file insurance paperwork to help you understand your benefits. Insurance benefits and financing terms vary by plan and provider. Our team will review your options before treatment. We accept Visa, MasterCard, CareCredit, and Cherry Payment Plans. We also offer an in-house Discount Dental Plan (not dental insurance), and our team can confirm current terms, eligibility, and fees before treatment.

A little clarity helps

Oral Exams: Your Questions, Answered.

There is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Bring your questions—we’ll help you understand what fits your smile.

How often should I have an oral exam?

There is no single interval for everyone. Many people are seen about every six months, while patients with cavities, gum disease, dry mouth, smoking history, pregnancy, or other risk factors may need visits more often. Your dentist will recommend a schedule based on your mouth and health history.

Are oral exams and dental cleanings the same thing?

No. An exam evaluates your teeth, gums, bite, and mouth for concerns. A cleaning removes plaque and tartar. They are often coordinated in preventive care, but the services have different purposes and your appointment plan may vary.

Will I need dental X-rays at every exam?

Not necessarily. The dentist decides whether imaging is appropriate based on your symptoms, oral health, history, and when you last had X-rays. Ask the team to explain why an image is recommended for your visit.

What if the exam finds a cavity or gum concern?

The dentist will explain what was found and discuss appropriate next steps, urgency, alternatives, and whether follow-up is needed. An exam does not commit you to treatment, and some findings may be monitored or addressed with preventive guidance.

Can I call about a painful tooth instead of booking a routine exam?

Yes. Call (225) 665-2417 and describe the problem so the team can give scheduling guidance. Do not wait for a routine visit if you have significant pain, swelling, fever, or an injury. Severe swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical help.
