Restorative care
Silver Diamine Fluoride in Denham Springs
Silver diamine fluoride, or SDF, is a professionally applied liquid that may help arrest selected areas of tooth decay without removing tooth structure. It can be a useful option when a conventional filling needs to be delayed or is not the best first step. Bencaz Family Dentistry can help you weigh its benefits, appearance changes, and alternatives.

A non-restorative option
What silver diamine fluoride does
SDF combines silver and fluoride in a topical solution. The silver has antimicrobial effects, while fluoride supports the tooth’s mineral structure. Used for caries management, it may slow or arrest progression in a selected cavity as part of a broader plan that includes home care and follow-up.
SDF is not a filling. It does not rebuild the tooth’s shape or replace missing tooth structure, and it is not intended to prevent every future cavity. Depending on the tooth, lesion, bite, and your priorities, alternatives may include fluoride or sealant care, a tooth-colored filling, or another restoration.
The appearance change is important
Treated decayed tooth structure typically turns dark brown or black, and that color change is generally permanent. Sound, mature enamel is usually not stained unless it has porosity or a surface defect. We will discuss where the treated area is and how visible it may be before you decide.
The goal is decay control
SDF may help stabilize decay, but the response varies and the tooth still needs observation. A conventional restoration may be recommended later if the lesion remains active, the tooth needs strength or shape restored, or symptoms develop.
Personalized assessment
Who may benefit from SDF
An examination helps determine whether SDF fits the tooth and the person. It may be considered for selected cavities in children or adults, including situations where a patient needs a less involved interim approach, has several areas to stabilize, or is not ready for conventional restorative care. The evidence base and treatment decision can differ by age, tooth surface, and whether the lesion is cavitated.
SDF may not be appropriate for every lesion or every patient. Your dentist will consider the depth and activity of decay, symptoms, the condition of the surrounding tooth and gums, allergies or sensitivities, and whether there are signs that require a different treatment. Pain, swelling, or infection should not be managed by SDF alone.
What to expect
Application, monitoring, and next steps
At the visit, the team examines the tooth, explains SDF alongside alternatives, and answers questions about the darkening effect. If you choose it, the area is prepared and kept as dry and protected as practical while a small amount of solution is professionally applied. Your dentist will explain what to expect afterward and whether another treatment is needed to restore function or appearance.
SDF often needs reassessment and may need repeat application for continued benefit; the timing depends on the lesion and your overall caries risk. Keep brushing with fluoride toothpaste, follow the care instructions provided, and return for recommended examinations. Contact the office if pain, swelling, or another new concern appears.
Planning your care
Discussing cost before treatment
There is no single SDF fee that applies to every visit. The cost can depend on the examination, number and location of lesions, repeat visits, and whether a filling or other restoration is also recommended. We can review your current estimate and treatment sequence before you make a decision.
We work with numerous dental insurance companies and can help with insurance paperwork, but benefits, deductibles, and patient responsibility depend on your plan. We offer Visa, MasterCard, CareCredit, and Cherry payment plans. We also offer an in-house Discount Dental Plan (not dental insurance). Call the team for current terms and to ask whether your plan applies. Insurance benefits and financing terms vary by plan and provider. Our team will review your options before treatment.

A little clarity helps
Silver Diamine Fluoride: Your Questions, Answered.
There is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Bring your questions—we’ll help you understand what fits your smile.
Will silver diamine fluoride make a tooth black?
Usually, the decayed tooth structure treated with SDF darkens brown or black. This is the main trade-off of the treatment and is generally permanent. The team will explain the likely visibility and alternatives before application.
Does SDF replace a filling?
No. SDF is a non-restorative approach that may arrest selected decay, but it does not rebuild lost tooth structure. A filling, crown, or other treatment may still be needed to restore strength, shape, or appearance.
Is SDF only for children?
No. SDF may be considered for selected lesions in children or adults, including some root-caries situations. Suitability depends on the tooth, lesion, symptoms, medical history, appearance concerns, and treatment goals.
How long does SDF last?
A single application may not provide sustained benefit. Your dentist will recommend when to reassess and whether repeat application or another treatment is appropriate. Regular home care and follow-up remain important.
