A clearer starting point
What TMD and TMJ mean
TMJ is the name of the jaw joint. TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, describes a group of conditions involving the jaw joints, chewing muscles, or related pain. Symptoms can include pain near the joint or in the face and neck, jaw stiffness, limited movement or locking, painful clicking or grating, headaches, or a change in how your teeth fit together.
A painless click by itself is common and may not require treatment. Because jaw and facial pain can have several causes, an evaluation helps separate a jaw-joint concern from a tooth, muscle, ear, or other health problem.
Personalized evaluation
Your visit focuses on the whole picture
We will ask when symptoms began, where you feel them, what makes them better or worse, and whether you clench, grind, experience headaches, or have had an injury. The dentist may check your teeth, jaw movement, joint sounds, facial and jaw-muscle tenderness, and the way your bite comes together. Imaging or another referral may be appropriate when the findings call for more information.
Depending on the concern, discussion may include observation, simple self-care, reducing clenching and gum chewing, softer foods for a short period, heat or cold, or a custom night guard when clinically appropriate. More involved care may include coordination with a physician, physical therapist, or other clinician. We do not assume that changing your teeth or bite is the right first step.
A measured plan
Follow-up matters
Many jaw symptoms improve with conservative care, while some persist or return. Your plan may include a follow-up to review comfort, jaw movement, and whether an appliance or home measures are helping. A night guard is not a cure for every cause of jaw pain, and wearing one without an evaluation may not address the underlying problem.
Tell us if symptoms change, your jaw locks, your bite feels different, or an appliance causes soreness. Severe swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing needs emergency medical help. For urgent dental pain or injury, call the office first so the team can guide you.
Planning your care
Discussing cost before treatment
There is no single TMD fee. The cost depends on the evaluation, any imaging, an appliance or other recommended care, and whether coordination with another provider is needed. We will explain the recommended steps and an estimate before you decide. Call Bencaz Family Dentistry for available terms rather than relying on an online price.
We work with numerous dental insurance companies and can help with insurance paperwork. Payment options include Visa, Mastercard, CareCredit, and Cherry. Insurance benefits and financing terms vary by plan and provider. Our team will review your options before treatment.

A little clarity helps
TMD / TMJ Treatment: Your Questions, Answered.
There is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Bring your questions—we’ll help you understand what fits your smile.
Does every clicking or popping jaw need treatment?
No. Clicking or popping without pain is common and may not require treatment. Pain, locking, limited movement, tenderness, or a change in your bite are reasons to schedule an evaluation.
What happens at a TMD evaluation?
The dentist reviews your symptoms and medical history, asks about timing and triggers, and examines jaw movement, joint sounds, muscle tenderness, teeth, and bite. Imaging or referral may be recommended when clinically appropriate.
Will a night guard fix my TMJ pain?
Not necessarily. A custom night guard may be appropriate for some people with clenching, grinding, or tooth wear, but it does not treat every cause of TMD. An evaluation should come first.
Should I see a doctor or physical therapist for jaw pain?
Sometimes. Dental and medical causes can overlap. After an evaluation, your dentist may recommend coordination with a physician, physical therapist, or another clinician when that better fits your symptoms.
